The most recent plan by House Republicans that would delay the Obamacare by a year would remove many provisions that American families depend on.
Who would be helped by a year delay of Obamacare exactly?
By the way the reason I was looking for THEIR SYSTEM DOESN’T WORK FOR YOU was this. There’s plenty I don’t love about the ACA: it doesn’t go far enough in ensuring 100% health care coverage from cradle to grave for every citizen, which should be a government’s second responsibility (right after “enforced mandatory Mountain Goats singalongs in all kindergarten classrooms”). Also, in the process of passing it the Democrats sent a very strong “we’re going to allow restrictions on abortion in exchange for things we want” message. That’s unacceptable to me.
But let’s be clear. Opposition to this act, and the desperate push by House Republicans to delay it, is about elections. Because when it goes into effect on October 1st, a lot of people are going to have health care who didn’t have it before. Those people will know that whatever a government’s failings - and there is not now and will not ever be any shortage of governmental failings; “failings” is putting the point rather mildly here - there’s also an upside, sometimes, to being governed. Rarely. But sometimes. The percentage of voters among the previously uninsured who will vote Democratic for the rest of their lives is probably near 100; it is powerful to go from “hope I don’t get sick, I can’t afford to get sick” to “if something goes wrong I can get help.” Nobody really buys that the GOP is worried about the effects of the ACA on the economy, do they? Last I remember they’d spent eight years flushing it down the toilet, and then flushing again & again repeatedly to make sure it stayed flushed.
This isn’t a blanket endorsement of the administration or even of the ACA. But let’s at least be honest. House Republicans don’t like the ACA because it might mean people end up feeling like they got some help from their elected representatives. The idea of all those people getting helped is noxious to them.
